Casa Mimosa

We bought the house as our own home-from-home in Italy, furnishing it with everything we needed to make our stay comfortable in summer and cosy and warm in winter. It offers you an ideal base for exploring Umbria and Tuscany, with their wealth of history, the sheer beauty of the landscape and huge variety of breathtaking medieval hilltop towns.

Location

The house is in the centre of Papiano, a tiny medieval fortified hamlet (borgo) hidden away in the gentle hills a few miles south of the University town of Perugia, the capital of Umbria. Quiet and peaceful, many properties in the village have been restored, with pretty cobbled paths winding between the houses, offering glimpses of the view across the Tiber valley to Deruta, the famous home of Majolica. In the newer part of Papiano, there is an excellent butcher, good general store, 2 bars and a post office, within 5 minutes walk from the house.

Further afield

Alleyway in village

Umbria and Tuscany offer beautiful landscapes, stunning architecture and a wealth of churches and art galleries. Nearby is the beautiful hilltop town of Todi, popular with weekending Romans. Around 40 minutes drive from the house; you will find Lake Trasimeno , a beautiful and relaxing place to enjoy boating and visiting the little islands in the middle of the lake. Assisi, with its world-famous Basilica of St Francis containing frescoes by Giotto and others, is only half an hour’s drive, while both Siena and Florence are around 1½ hours.

The local station, which connects to all main centres, is only 2 kilometres from the house.

With cheap but good local wine from the local cantina, excellent restaurants and friendly Italians, you won’t want to go home!

The watercolour illustrations on these and other pages of this website come from a children’s book called ‘The Castello Cats’.  It was illustrated by Linda Goodhew and the paintings are drawn from real scenes in or near Papiano and Castello delle Forme, the nearby village where Lin Lane, the author of the book, lives.  If you would like to learn more, follow the link below to the Enquiry page.
